What is an ATA Carnet?
An ATA Carnet is an internationally recognised customs document that permits the temporary import and export of goods free of duties and taxes for up to one year. It is widely referred to as a “passport for goods” and is accepted in over 80 countries and territories. Unlike the CPD Carnet, which is specific to vehicles, the ATA Carnet covers a broader range of items including vehicles, exhibition equipment, commercial samples, race cars, spare parts and professional equipment. The legal framework for the ATA Carnet is provided by the Istanbul Convention (1990).
Who Issues the Carnet?
ATA Carnets are issued by authorised Chambers of Commerce in each participating country. Through our established partnerships, CARS is able to arrange ATA Carnets on behalf of clients, ensuring all relevant paperwork is correctly prepared and submitted.
When is an ATA Carnet Used?
ATA Carnets are particularly useful for:
- Race and rally vehicles traveling to international events.
- Collector cars loaned for concours d’elegance or exhibitions.
- Vehicles displayed at trade shows or press launches.
- Temporary import of parts, tools or specialist equipment.
Validity and Coverage
- Valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue.
- May be used for multiple trips during the period of validity.
- Accepted in over 80 countries and customs territories worldwide.
- Covers three main categories: professional equipment, commercial samples and goods for exhibitions and fairs.
